There is an important question with a very simple answer. The question is, "What separates your business from your competition in such as way as that it would be nearly impossible for your competition to match it?" The simple answer? YOU! As a small business owner, you are the difference. You are your company's Sustainable Competitive Advantage (SCA).
As you write your business plan, you will need to get through to the reader (bank, investor!) that you are the right person to run this business. Your resume will be one important part of that, but the key paragraph is the Sustainable Competitive Advantage. Let the investor or banker know that your professional and personal history make you THE person to run this business.
Here's how I like to put it in business plans I write: "[business owner]'s unique combination of personal and professional (or entrepreneurial or educational, etc.) experience makes him/her the ideal person to make [business] a success. It is this set of experiences that translates into a unique experience for [business]'s customers."
How does your history translate into a unique customer experience? This is your Sustainable Competitive Advantage and should be in your business plan!
